Planets ruling Sephiroth on the Tree of Life

Perhaps it’s Uranus transiting over my natal sun right now that’s inspiring me to write a bit about the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. For beginners, I’ll just mention that the Tree of Life is an interesting model of consciousness. Based on the mythical tree in the book of Genesis (from which one could eat and live forever), the Kabbalistic Tree of Life (often abbreviated as ToL) metaphorically explains how divine energy can move from the heavenly to the earthly.

Most sephiroth on the ToL are considered to be ruled by celestial aspects or by the elements; the ten sephiroth, or spheres (i.e., of consciousness/spiritual states) on the ToL and their respective rulers are:

  1. Kether, “The Crown”
  2. Chokmah, “Wisdom,” ruled by the Zodiac
  3. Binah, “Understanding,” ruled by Saturn
(Da’ath, “Knowledge,” is considered to be a false sephirah; in some traditions it’s also thought to be all sephiroth at once, though I find this unhelpful and somewhat incorrect)
  4. Chesed, “Mercy,” ruled by Jupiter
  5. Geburah, “Strength,” ruled by Mars
  6. Tiphareth, “Beauty,” ruled by the Sun
  7. Netzach, “Victory,” ruled by Venus
  8. Hod, “Splendo(u)r,” ruled by Mercury
  9. Yesod, “Foundation,” ruled by the Moon
  10. Malkuth, “Kingdom,” ruled by the four elements

The rulership of these sephiroth differ from the astrological essential dignity of domicile, which holds that planets have greatest effectiveness in zodiacal sign (e.g., Aries, Taurus, etc.): the Sun is strongest in the royal sign of Leo, the Moon in the nurturing sign of Cancer, etc. There are further essential dignities including

Sephirothic rulership, however, is less about what brings the planet strength, but rather what brings the sephiroth completeness. The Splendor of all the possibilities of form to be made in the physical world is brought to completion by Mercury, which can flow from idea to idea, configuration to configuration. The Triumph of any given form, moreover, is brought to completeness when it is in fact a pleasurable one (for what is the point in Victory without the thrill?).

One consideration is whether to re-assign the planets Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto to the final two sephiroth. From personal experience of the higher sephiroth, my judgment is not to do so. Uranus, the planet some folks consider to rule Chokmah, is commonly considered among astrologers as a “wild card” planet and a rebellious planet. My experience of Chokmah (“Wisdom”) is that it provides an individual insight into an optimal approach to reality. Wisdom is an optimal means to govern one’s life because it is an incorporation of an undeniable aspect of nature, which can be succinctly declared in a Law. Rebellious Uranus doesn’t seem to fit this idea, though one could argue that the newly declared Law is a necessary reflection of a previously unseen aspect of reality.

Nonetheless, more fundamental to my judgment is the contrast between Binah (“Understanding”), ruled by Saturn, the greater malefic and Lord of Time, and Chokmah. Binah occupies the top of the pillar of Severity on the ToL, while Chokmah occupies the top of the pillar of Mercy (ascending the Middle Pillar of Mildness is often considered a standard goal of the Kabbalah). Saturn reflects the need for discipline and patience, and brings Binah (often described as all possibilities and thus bringing the initiate the Vision of Sorrow) to completeness by imposing its cold order and a logical connectivity of these possible states into a coherent flow (eliminating–bringing death!–to nearly all of them!). If feminine Binah is ruled by the Lord of Time, then masculine and protruding Chokmah, it follows, should be ruled by Space itself. Space and time being essential aspects of the universe, the Zodiac seems like the superior choice of ruler.

What rules Kether, the Crown? As you might guess, I don’t believe it is ruled by either Neptune or Pluto. My argument is that it lacks formal rulership, except that it is existence itself, which does have limits. Therefore, I would argue that perception rules Kether–reality perceives itself, no matter what, and therefore perhaps the best way to put it is that the Divine rules it, for the Divine is the Complete Perceiver, and initiates into Kether may partake of the perception of the Divine.

Some scholars suggest that the Biblical Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil are the same tree. Eating of the Crown this Tree, I can tell you that the answer is yes: as I put it when first scrying the Enochian Aethyr of LIL: “This is the End of Death.”

Miniature SDAs

Those familiar with the Enochian system are likely aware of the Sigillum Dei Aemeth (SDA), or “Seal of God’s Truth,” a disc made of beeswax which is carved by the magician. This gorgeous seal has on its top an outer ring segmented into 40 parts, which circumscribes a heptagon of 49 spaces (7 for each side), which touches an inner heptagram at the points, within which are two more heptagons, the inner of which touches a pentagram. On the bottom, the Notarikon AGLA (Atah Gibor Le-olam Adonai,” or “Thou art powerful forever, Lord”) is written in a clockwise formation, within which several interlocking crosses are arranged.

There are hundreds of letters and numbers to be written on the spaces in the front in order to complete this seal. This can be done, but it takes patience on the 9″ version to do so when working with the beeswax: it an immense amount of when working on the four 4″ versions! My recommendation is to do so on the miniature (4″) SDAs soon after making the geometric template (and not waiting for a year, as I did!). Another caution is that it’s much easier to make a mistake with these, so be patient and careful. Double-check each place before lettering it. However, the angelic “high” that comes from making these smaller pieces of the temple furniture is the same as for the SDA, so it’s worth it from that perspective alone.

I’ll be reporting back after having done the lettering on all 4 of these. Chances are I’ll re-scry LIL again (that being my main Enochian activity nowadays).

Chakra awareness ritual

Another non-Enochian ritual. This one came to me from a female figure in a dream.

So during meditation or as you fall asleep, think back to your birthday, and then back to your conception day.

Think of your parents and all the energies they were bringing to that sexual act—the raw emotionality.

Now take your astral hands and make a clasping fist over your navel, like a Christmas caroler. Alternate back and forth over which hand is on top. Increase the speed (remember, this is astral, so you can technically have them going as fast as the Flash, just don’t move your physical hands).

Now, extend your astral palms in front of each other, about six inches apart, like you’re trying to show how big something is to someone, except this your hands are closer to your navel. Alternate where they are with your navel as the common center.

You’re going to make an octagon by rapidly alternating your extended palms in opposing locations: up down, left right, up-left/down right, & up-right/down-left. Just keep alternating your hands’ locations about this common center.

Now imagine a glow appearing where your fists were, but your hands are now making an octagon about it (it need not be an inscribing octagon). Next, imagine a screen appearing around where the orb was. You can still have your moving hands in the back of your mind but now focus on the screen.

A story may appear about what’s happening with you at this chakra on this screen.

Note: you can do this same technique for each/all of your chakras. You can imagine multiple pairs of hands (like a Hindu god) on the astral. You will have an opportunity to create a new alignment of how these chakras are relating to each other and to the world at large. When I did this for my third eye in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, I saw a crying child on the screen. I then rearranged the chakras in order to better use the energies there….

Review | Success Magick: The Hidden Power of Enochian Rituals, by Damon Brand

This book challenges a great deal of the conventional wisdom surrounding Enochian magick. I’ll start by listing some of the proposed changes, then evaluating the relative justification of these changes. Along the way, I will evaluate the practical usefulness.

One of the first modifications made by is the proposed working order to the Aethyrs. As author Damon Brand admits, this is quite controversial for practitioners, where the bottom-up, Numbers 30 to 1 approach is the norm.

The justification that Brand offers is a dubious one: that this is the order that Dee received them in. However, this ignores an obvious reason as to why the angels presented the Aethyrs to Dee in this order: the Angels, looking at the highest Aethyr—it being closest to God—start there (they are messengers from God, after all) and then work their way to the farthest Aethyr.

Furthermore, having scried all 30 Aethyrs (from the bottom up) and also having scried some Aethyrs out of order before having done all 30, I can emphatically state that the energy of this Aethyr is quite intense. Readers of this book, introduced to this energy of LIL without prior experience, would either have to manage such energy without any experience with it, or would get a limited version of it.

For practical and theoretical reasons, this is not an approach I endorse. Regarding the sigils for the Aethyrs, they seem plausible enough (the outer circle uses the initial text of the call to each Aethyr), but using them as means for “success” without touching on the depth of the energy at play was disappointing. I’ve no doubt that the Aethyrs can provide a means for success, but the practitioner may get far more than bargained for, not in the sense of a “monkey’s paw,” but rather in the sense of perhaps being set upon a path to do advanced work that was not necessarily chosen. While I personally value the soul-unfolding nature of this work, novice readers may not yet share such a value.

Additional changes of note to the restored Enochian system are the changes made the watchtowers. The watchtower tablets are modified into sigils so as to include god names and three angels for each sigil. Why, for a 7-based system, the three additional god names that are also used in the ritual to call upon these angels weren’t included as part of the sigil is strange. Indeed, these angels and the additional three god names themselves already appear on the watchtower tablet, so their inclusion in a standalone sigil seems superfluous and redundant. Furthermore the main god names from the black cross can be incorporated into the watchtowers without issue: the watchtowers themselves are sufficient.

The effectiveness of such watchtower-derived rituals seems likely, but the rationale for them is unclear; angels are intelligent beings who can indeed be called upon via derived rituals, without calls, but it seems strange that a method to sidestep the means of communication–namely, the Enochian calls–that the angels themselves transmitted. This strikes me as the celestial equivalent of calling a friend during work hours who asks that you text them. Sure, they’ll kindly reply, but is this really how you want to treat them?

Ultimately, I give this book 3.5/5 stars. It’s likely to have some effectiveness, but not as much as the means offered in other works on Enochian. Unfortunately, it does not seem to be a good introduction into the system. One line in particular I take issue with: “[T]he angels…urged us to stop fretting over the nature of the magick, to stop worrying about the details, and stop obsessing over what it all means.” I dare say that most who have studied and practiced this system magick know better.

Heart invocation

This ritual includes some Enochian; it translates to “Arise, move, and appear, Crown-Heart-Mind-Diamond-Light-Body, to the intent that thorns of the marrow of the heart may become trussed with light. Because all is one, listen and look, as a covenant with all, (on) the voice and wonders of all.”

Heart invocation

Procul, procul, este profani.

Bahlasti! Ompehda!

O, All which I perceive, in the name of PELE, give me true answers eternally as to everything about which I wonder.

O, you poetry in motion,

O, you speaker in the stillness.

Out of the utter marrow of our hearts cometh this: we can no longer be silent, and our ears must open as our mouths! We must forge the glorious song that is begging to be birthed among us! Music must pour forth from us as one glorious harmony!

O, Come into me as one, You Who govern my perception, Ye Who perceive me in my subtlety and divinity, Ye Who move me and Ye Whom I move, Ye Who govern all my relationships.

Come into me as one, in an eternally unfolding and enfolding multiplex relationship with all I am, Ye Whom I have called, and allow us all to work harmoniously, hearts crowned in our True spirit as a gloriously living and aware nexus.

Come into me as one, Ye parts of All, You totality of All. Let transcendence and mundane, unfolding and enfolding, become married in our midst!

Behold! I am I! I am They! I am All! All is one! Eternally rolling, evolving, leaping, reveling, revealing, growing, and weaving, in an inexorable roaring flow! This perfect magnetic flow shall be borne witness to, as it bridges light to light, color to color, dust to life, life to awareness, awareness to continuity, continuity to fullness, the fullness to the beauty of infinity.

Unexpected effects of Enochian on angelic interaction

I thought I’d mention something that I hadn’t seen in the literature before (if someone has a link that goes into this particular effect, feel free to leave it in the comments). I only mention it on account of this happening to me twice, so I can’t write it off as a fluke. After some time working with the Aethyrs–indeed, as part of scrying the later Aethyrs a second time–I found that my Holy Guardian Angel (Knowledge & Conversation, or K&C, happening over a year earlier) had enfolded himself around my energetic body and took on a subtler role.

Usually, I think of K&C as relating to a being who can always be a go-to buffer against the spiritual realm, acting as both intermediary and protector against spiritual forces, as well as an entity who can always bring clarity and add to one’s intuitive power. The HGA is an agent of God who, after the K&C has been permanently stabilized in your awareness on an at-will basis, has all of these Divinely orchestrated powers at its disposal. However, it seems that I have sufficient understanding to have my HGA operate at a subtle level, and my HGA needn’t be constantly called up for protection or clarification–he can simply operate in the background instead.

This didn’t quite make sense (hey, it’s magick), but simply subtly directing my attention towards him increases his energy, and I know that, if I decided it was necessary to speak further, he could unfold and speak to me as a distinct being.

What I have been doing of late is a semi-regular, once every week or two re-scrying of the Aethyr of LIL (in addition to meditation about 5 or 6 times a week–nobody’s perfect!). This has been going on for a few months. I just find it helpful to deepen the Kether awareness, and see where it takes me. The most recent time I scried the governors of this Aethyr (Occodon, Pascomb, & Valgars) went ahead and did the same thing that my HGA had, enfolded themselves about my energy system. I’m not entirely sure what it’s about, but, much like when my HGA did so, I welcome their sustained presence as a blessing and an honor. Obviously these n-dimensional entities are capable of being in more than one place at once, and this sort of thing could happen to another magician, so I’m not worried about this suggesting any sort of limits to the system.

If anyone else has gone through this, let me know. Whenever I scry LIL, the governors tend to form a tetrahedron about me (as does God via three aspects, in all making a Merkaba): the Enochian system is very geometry-heavy. This latest development, however, seems more permanent and not limited to scrying. If I determine the intent behind this, I will add a later post.

Getting started with Aethyrs: reports on TEX.

I thought I’d share some experiences with students who have gone through my Enochian magick classes; as part of the class, we scry the lowest of the Aethyrs, TEX. I’ve also called this Aethyr with a couple of other people. Here are some reported effects:

One student reported seeing a tunnel with red and orange colors, then a white angelic being who was about 10-12 feet tall (the height of the ceiling) in a robe. He also felt a heat on one side of his face.

Another reported feeling spun around like a top (“whirling” is a common experience in TEX). She also saw colors.

A third reported just a sense of serenity.

A fourth reported whirling as well as seeing a lot of geometric shapes.

A fifth reported a sense of deep quiet in her mind (which is otherwise very busy).

A sixth reported feeling whirling around her. I asked her if she could see this whirling, and she said no, but interestingly, she said that she had very bad eyesight as a child and as a result, she has almost no visualization ability.

One of the things that’s been of interest to me is that I have also been blessed with visions of what is happening in the room as these effects happen and so can report to folks in the room what I’m seeing.

That said, it’s easier with fewer people. 🙂

“Silgaeth” (Sigil) for activating the diamond body.

Upon re-scrying LIL, I asked regarding how to activate the diamond body of Taoism (and Rosicrucianism). I was told I could make a divine sigil (referred by the angels in the vision as “SILGAETH”–similar to LOAGAETH) to this effect. Rather than a proper sigil, I made a 7×7 square which is the statement: “OI ALCHIDAO QAA OL, CONGAMPHLGH, MOLVI OD HOM A NACRO OL OD IAD,” which translates roughly to “This diamond creation/garment [i.e., “body”] (of) me, man’s spirit [also, “the Holy Ghost”[?!]] surges and lives in renewal (of) me and God.”

Of interest is the relative dearth of letters: Med, Un, & Gon for the vowels, and Ur, Na, Veh, Ged, Don, Gal, Drux, Tal, Ger, Van, & Mals, exactly 2/3 of the entire Enochian alphabet.

Med: 11
Un: 8
Ur: 5
Gon 4
Na: 4
Gal: 4
Veh: 3
Ged: 2
Drux: 2
Tal: 2
Don: 1
Ger: 1
Van: 1
Mals: 1

After activating it, I have had some profound and intriguing effects. I recommend this those initiated into Kether, Chokmah, (and possibly even Binah). I’d like to hear your experiences with it.

Light-Bridge YHVH Ritual

I have been thinking about how to create a ritual to extend Light-Bridge consciousness. During today’s meditation, the answer seemed to come.

  1. Ground. If needed or desired, perform the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram and/or of the Hexagram.
  2. Middle Pillar Ritual (expanded, if preferred).
  3. If applicable, the magician evokes her or his Holy Guardian Angel.
  4. The magician aspires towards Kether and towards the cosmic heart (universal Tiphareth).
  5. If possible, the magician attains the highest supernal consciousness into which the magician has been initiated. Otherwise, the magician cultivates aspiration towards the supernals as done during the Middle Pillar.
  6. At this point the magician prays to the Divine to direct the magician’s light-bridge to its proper destination.
  7. The magician expands (or aspires to expand) her or his consciousness to include both Atziluth (if attained) and Briah (if attained), especially Tiphareth.
  8. In Briah, within a vivid sense of clear light, the magician visualizes three golden wedding rings, each with a single diamond, and which rotate around a common center, being created from emanations in Atziluth.
  9. The outermost ring leaves the other three, and is visualized as inverting (so that the diamond of the ring is on the inner rather than the outer portion). This comes around the chest of the magician such that the diamond stations itself in the heart of the magician. The magician vibrates: Yod.
  10. The magician now visualizes the middle ring uncurling from the point opposite the diamond. One end links to the ring surrounding the magician, the other end carries the third ring to its destination. The diamond of this middle ring may shatter into many smaller diamonds, into a hard thin layer around the uncurled ring, even into ornamental diamond-flowers, or it may remain exactly the same size and shape; regardless, it refracts and bends light around it into the beautiful pattern that it was meant to create. The magician vibrates: Heh.
  11. The magician visualizes the third ring inverting itself as the first ring did, diamond facing the inside, and this ring reaching its destination and diamond stationed in the heart of its recipient. The magician vibrates: Vav.
  12. The bridge is complete. The magician has the sure knowledge that this bridge will surely lead to the creation of another, and visualizes this happening at its proper moment. The magician again vibrates: Heh.
  13. If desired, prayers of thanks.
  14. The magician returns to the physical body. The ritual is complete. Additional banishing may be done, if desired.

Aethyr working: LIN

[March 2, 2019].

I am following the technique of placing attention on attention, and meta-attention, and further meta-awareness on meta-awareness. It appears that the angels are waiting for me to complete this, so I continue. Eventually I have a vision of chaos of all awareness, which in my mind seems like a whirling cloud: it’s a lot for me to handle, so I continue to gaze into the mirror. I see a bit of a pond. They instruct me to close my eyes, so I see a stream emptying into a pond. This parallels the nature field visions from prior Aethyrs. I’m reminding myself of lovingkindness; I continue on that meditation for a bit.

I’m staring into the pond, and from it arises a great angel. The angel is appearing to some extent on the HTOP. I’m trying to maintain awareness and union. It’s a large—probably 7- or 8-foot angel. He’s taking me by the hand. We’re walking upon the water. I am—he sets me upon the ground, and I am, partly on account of my meditative state, I am turning into millions and billions of particles. These are swirling, and he is swirling himself in a similar manner, and he instructs me to take on my human form (usually it’s the other way around), so I do that. As part of this, I put awareness on awareness—and I’m going to take this a step further and continue to put Briatic and Yetziratic and Atziluthic awareness on awareness, all sort of returning me to that same spot, and so on: infinite regress. This is a lot for my mind to take on (I strain at the concentration). That’s okay: I’m noticing these changes and I am doing the infinite regress thing and putting awareness on just my physical and metaphysical state.

I’m instructed to breathe, so I’m breathe. I can feel the energy throughout my physical body change, so I put my meta-awareness on all of that, and putting myself back into that state of union [with awareness], and then putting awareness on that union repeatedly, and I’m feeling this very large current of energy now, and he instructs me that this is the path to the ultimate union, and to continue on that path, and that he is very pleased with the progress. I’m very grateful for such progress, but I’m trying to avoid an ego boost, but he says it’s nothing, it

[the ego]

is a delusion and it [consciousness] is merely a flow, so I’m feeling it in my solar plexus right now. He is linking it—he is showing me earth—but he doesn’t want it to be too much of an earthly feeling, so he’s taking me up into heaven.

In heaven, this same feeling in my solar plexus is extending out to, in this lightning-like way, to all of these other beings in heaven. He says this is Chokmah, and to continue that meditative state, and so I do, putting awareness on awareness, meta-awareness, and awareness on union, and I’m including, because this is now the case, the object of awareness is heaven itself. I’m proceeding to put awareness on awareness on heaven itself, (I strain) and it is very powerful feeling energy right now that is opening up, and the angel says to hold off, to just take it down a step. I say, “OK.” He says this is going to continue to get more intense as I continue through [the Aethyrs]. He instructs me that this is the proper path for me to do it, this is well worth the while, and I’m—even as I’m expressing concern about the amount of energy [expended]—he says to just continue with it, to continue with this method.

So I say “Okay.” My mind flits upon the watchtowers [that I have yet to build], he says that everything is already here and coming together. I’m looking at alternative ways [to build the watchtowers], needed to build it. [Here the angel provides instructions to build the watchtower tablets that I made in my possession.] He mentions that the angels like geometry. He tells me to continue at my job; I say “OK.” He reminds me that that which I desire is grand, difficult, but not impossible. He notes my interest in political engagement; he informs me that truly this inner focus is more important right now; he reminds me that these are vicissitudes. I ask about the moral nature of my preferred candidate, whom he says is very moral; I ask if it is plausible, wise, and in the nature of the Divine Will to help this candidate win, and I am getting a very affirmative yes. Indeed, at this moment, it is not merely a matter of if but when I should move forward politically: “For behold, it has been destined.” This generates skepticism in me on account of that affirmation, just because I understand the nature of this [i.e., that spirits often flatter].

I ask if there is anything they would like to share for my magical colleagues. The angel tells me that God is waking the minds of humanity, and that people who practice magick are carrying out their co-divine role in the cosmos…that it should be turned (if it is to be done in the most appropriate manner) toward this liberation of human consciousness and setting humanity into its state of sustainability and expansion (e.g., into the cosmos). I express skepticism, but he tells me to be silent on that matter [Editorial note: there is tension between sustainability and expansion). I say, “OK,” but acknowledge my own divinity, so he bows to my own as well. There suddenly seems to be a great deal of angels who appear at this point. I remember to practice lovingkindness and once again to place attention on attention. He tells me that every time I do this consistently and with enough effort I will be reminded once again of my state of nature. So, I allow the vision to continue and I’m packed full of angels around me. I’m seeing a very solid—it’s as if goldened iron, or cast into this very strong steel—or, you throw in the mercurial quality of mercury with the denseness of lead—they [all of these kinds of metals] are all merging together, and this is how the path before me is laid out. And I’m getting a message: if it is [your] True Will to be wise, then the acts carried out with respect to that True Will are to gain and act from Wisdom, which means that they will always be ever-changing. They will be much more mercurial, and indeed I’m shown this sort of direct line of uniting different natures.

At any rate I feel there’s a very large contingent of angelic forces. There’s a feeling of mutual respect; a very large nexus, which for someone who is an introvert to become aware of, having an extremely extroverted spiritual side—seeing all of these angels and interacting with them [is ironic]. I thank the angels for their time and for their wisdom and their insight, and with that the vision ends.
